Biography
Though her years place her near many J-Pop performers, Yo Hitoto maintained a less polished singer/songwriter approach while still appearing on the same rankings those acts occupied. She completed university studies prior to committing fully to music and began, like numerous others, in voice work. That period proved short yet granted her visibility in broader venues. Her debut single from 2003, “Morai Naki,” entered the Oricon charts at number four and remained listed for 68 weeks, opening the door to her first album, Tsukitenshin. That release also reached number four on the album charts and highlighted the Taiwanese heritage of the half-Taiwanese Hitoto, drawing an expanded audience. Her next several albums repeated the pattern, entering the Oricon Top Five at once and then lingering through entire seasons. Only the 2006 greatest-hits collection Bestyo, issued after just three prior albums, broke the sequence by reaching number two and moving 700,000 copies, a notable figure given Japan’s population size and the brief cycles typical of J-Pop. Following a romantic scandal with composer and keyboardist Kobayashi Takeshi, Hitoto reappeared with the 2008 album Key, which opened at number three before fading from view.
