Biography
Yvonne Loriod stood out as an exceptionally gifted pianist whose interpretations and recordings brought widespread attention to twentieth-century piano repertoire, while she also served as a trusted musical collaborator to her spouse Olivier Messiaen, many of whose compositions were conceived with her particular abilities in view. Her performances stood apart through their vivid tonal palette and precise rhythmic insight. She exerted considerable influence as a pedagogue whose pupils included Pierre-Laurent Aimard, Roger Muraro, and Peter Donohoe.
Her initial instruction came from her godmother Madame Eminger-Sivade. Even in childhood she offered monthly recitals, supported by her teacher, that spanned Classical, Romantic, and Modern compositions. Prior to enrolling at the Paris Conservatoire she had already mastered Bach’s Well-Tempered Klavier, Beethoven’s sonatas, the music of Chopin and Schumann, and Mozart’s concertos. There she pursued piano studies under Isidor Philipp, Marcel Ciampi, and Lazare Lévy, while also completing courses in chamber music, piano accompaniment, and fugue and receiving composition lessons from both Messiaen and Milhaud. She departed the institution having secured seven premiers prix. In a further display of virtuosity she presented twenty-two Mozart concertos within a single week alongside the Lamoureux Orchestra under the direction of Pierre Boulez, Bruno Maderna, and Louis Martin.
Her first joint appearance with Messiaen occurred in 1943 at the premiere of his Vision de l'amen. She subsequently performed and recorded every work of his that involved the piano and became his second wife in 1961. Her initial American appearance came with the world premiere of Messiaen’s Turangalila Symphony, given by Leonard Bernstein and the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1949 and featuring her younger sister Jeanne on the ondes Martenot. She regularly programmed and documented pieces by Schoenberg, Bartók, Barraqué, and Boulez as well. In 1961 she joined Boulez for the first performance of his Structures, Book 2 at Donaueschingen. Her discography earned twelve Grand Prix du Disque awards. She held teaching posts at the Paris Conservatoire from 1967 until 1989 and at Darmstadt. Among her students, Pierre-Laurent Aimard developed into a leading exponent of Messiaen and other twentieth-century composers. Loriod prepared the extensive Traité de rythme, de couleur et d'ornithologie for publication and likewise aided in editing many of Messiaen’s scores. She remained active as a performer into the 1990s, served on juries such as the triennial Concours Olivier Messiaen, and took part in various Messiaen festivals during the early 2000s. Loriod died in 2010 at age 86 in Saint-Denis near Paris.
