Ricky Martin's Grammy Performance and the Latin Pop Moment It Engineered

On February 24, 1999, Ricky Martin performed at the 41st Annual Grammy Awards and triggered the so-called Latin Explosion. Written by Draco Rosa and Desmond Child and recorded entirely on Pro Tools at Desmond Child's Miami home studio, "Livin' la Vida Loca" was both a genuine cultural rupture and a carefully engineered crossover, built on real Latin musical architecture while being packaged to travel as far as possible across American radio.
