Biography
Serving Duke Christian and Duke Ernst August of Sachsen-Weimar as lutenist, harpsichordist, and composer, Falckenhagen first trained on the harpsichord before devoting himself to the lute. Jacob Graf provided his initial guidance on the instrument, after which he continued his studies with Weiss in Dresden. His surviving pieces for lute rank among the final works composed for the instrument, establishing him as the last major figure in the Baroque lute tradition while also displaying clear movement toward the galant style. Sonatas, concertos, and partitas formed the core of his output.
