Originating in Osaka, the western Japanese metropolis, Afrirampo embody the city's frenetic and untethered rock ethos, echoing the path set by predecessors such as Boredoms and Acid Mothers Temple. Oni and Pikachu, the duo's only members, launched the project in 2002 and swiftly attracted attention within lo-fi experimental circles through their fusion of unstructured garage punk with absurdist vocal exchanges in call-and-response form. They soon partnered with underground figures including Keiji Haino and Yoko Ono. Initial output consisted of self-issued CD-Rs before Gyuune Cassette issued the mini-album Afrirampo during summer 2004. Even after vanishing for months into the Cameroonian jungle to reside among Pygmy communities, the pair accelerated their ascent via a U.S. trek alongside Lightning Bolt and a European run with Sonic Youth.

Three fresh albums appeared throughout 2005. Urusa in Japan arrived first via Sony's Ki/oon imprint, presenting largely reworked versions of earlier material that captured the group's frenzied energy already familiar from concert settings. Kore Ga Mayaku Da followed on John Zorn's Tzadik label, revealing a slower, more hallucinatory dimension of their sound. Toward year's end, the collaborative Acid Mothers Afrirampo surfaced on Acid Mothers Temple's own AMT imprint.

The demanding pace of releases gave way in 2006 mainly to live work, though recordings sparked by their African sojourn emerged as Baka Ga Kita!!! The band then entered a break while Oni prepared for motherhood and Pikachu pursued solo endeavors plus numerous spontaneous performances with nearby musicians. New material finally returned in September 2007 with Suuto Breakor on the P-Vine imprint and without an accompanying tour. The record displayed broader sonic palettes and more diverse structural approaches than prior work, indicating artistic growth for both Oni and Pikachu.
