Biography
Katsuhiko Maeda, working as a multi-instrumentalist and composer, shapes intense and expansive compositions under the name World's End Girlfriend. Abrupt contrasts in volume and unexpected structural turns define his pieces, which layer orchestral writing with abrasive sliding guitars, digital glitches, driving breakbeats, and dense electronic treatments to produce a daring fusion of neo-classical, post-rock, and IDM approaches. Operating out of Tokyo, where he established Virgin Babylon Records, Maeda began issuing recordings in 2000 and earned notice for The Lie Lay Land in 2005 as well as the joint project with MONO, Palmless Prayer/Mass Murder Refrain. Hurtbreak Wonderland, released in 2007, remains a listener favorite, while he also supplied music for films such as the 2012 score Starry Starry Night and continued to produce live documents, remixes, further collaborations, and studio albums including Last Waltz in 2016. The ambitious triple-album Resistance & the Blessing, lasting two and a half hours, appeared in 2023.
Born in Nagasaki, Maeda took up music early and launched the World's End Girlfriend project with the 2000 album Ending Story, a release whose lighter character sets it apart from most of his later output. Farewell Kingdom followed in 2001 and reached international audiences on vinyl through the British label Third Ear Recordings. Using the World's End Boyfriend alias, he also put out the seasonal EP Xmas Song. In late 2002 he issued Dream's End Come True as World's End Girlfriend alongside the ambient work Enchanted Landscape Escape, his sole recording under the name Wonderland Falling Yesterday. The Lie Lay Land surfaced in 2005, and he teamed with the post-rock ensemble MONO on the cinematic album Palmless Prayer/Mass Murder Refrain. Hurtbreak Wonderland arrived in 2007, after which Maeda composed his first film score, 2009's Air Doll.
Seven Idiots, released in 2010, marked the founding of Virgin Babylon Records; the album proved comparatively accessible and appeared internationally on Erased Tapes. The label reissued earlier Maeda material and released his second soundtrack, Starry Starry Night, in 2012. Several EPs, a live album, and a split with Vampillia preceded the next studio effort, Last Waltz in 2016, which was followed by a remix collection and the concert recording Last Waltz in Tokyo. A few standalone singles preceded the 2021 soundtrack A Girl on the Shore. In 2023 World's End Girlfriend delivered its most expansive album yet, the 145-minute Resistance & the Blessing, featuring contributions from samayuzame, CRZKNY, Smany, and others.
