Biography
Suga, a founding force within the globally dominant K-pop act BTS, injected the seven-member ensemble with raw aggression and urban savvy through his work as rapper, producer, and songwriter, also recording solo under the Agust D alias. His initial independent step arrived in 2016 with the self-titled mixtape issued as Agust D, followed in 2020 by D-2, which contained the charting single “Daechwita.” Once collective BTS schedules eased, he unveiled his first full-length studio album under the Agust D name, the 2023 release D-Day.
Born Min Yoon-gi in Daegu, South Korea, he began composing songs at age 13, later rapping underground under the name Gloss and aligning with the crew D-Town. Breakthrough came in 2013 upon joining BTS, the pop septet that cultivated an enormous worldwide audience through successive chart-topping projects and extensive international touring. August 2016 brought the free Agust D mixtape on BigHit Entertainment, a self-produced effort that shifted focus from glossy idol aesthetics toward candid examinations of depression, anxiety, and celebrity. The project featured the explosive title track “Agust D,” built around a sample of James Brown’s “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World,” plus guest spots from Yankie on “Tony Montana” and Suran on “So Far Away.” Reissued in 2018, the mixtape reached the Top Five on both the World Albums and Heatseekers charts while peaking at number 46 on the Billboard Emerging Artist chart.
D-2, the second mixtape, surfaced in May 2020. Chronicling the intervening years, it wove traditional Korean narrative forms, instrumentation, and military music into Suga’s hip-hop foundation, with appearances by MAX, NiiHWa, Kim Jong Wan of NELL, and BTS leader RM.
Issued in 2023, D-Day marked Agust D’s official studio debut. Guests J-Hope and Ryuichi Sakamoto joined as the project further integrated Korean textural elements with hardened hip-hop production and lyricism.
