Biography
Alain Altinoglu, who occupies leading positions across both operatic and symphonic spheres, has steadily built recognition with a wide range of listeners. He serves as chief conductor of Belgium’s La Monnaie opera house and of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, while also appearing on recordings as a collaborative keyboardist and maintaining an active role as an educator. His extensive discography features a 2024 account of Florent Schmitt’s mime dance La Tragédie de Salomé.
Born in Paris on October 9, 1975, Altinoglu belongs to an Armenian lineage that reached the city via Istanbul, where the family adopted a Turkish surname. He completed his studies at the Conservatoire de Paris (CNSMD), joined its teaching staff shortly after graduation, and by 2014 had become director of the conducting program. His first recording appeared in 2005 when he led the Orchestre National de Montpellier in Pascal Dusapin’s opera Perelà, Uomo di Fumo for the Naïve label. The next year he participated in a forward-looking project, directing an orchestra behind techno artist Jeff Mills in one of the earliest fusions of electronica and classical performance.
Altinoglu made his initial guest appearance at La Monnaie in 2011; the company subsequently named him music director beginning in 2016, with the agreement later prolonged until 2031. He has appeared as a guest at major houses that include the Metropolitan Opera, the Vienna State Opera, and the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, and in 2015 he conducted a new production of Wagner’s Lohengrin at the Bayreuth Festival. His first engagement with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, also known as the hr-Sinfonieorchester, took place in August 2019; at the close of that year the ensemble appointed him chief conductor starting with the 2021-2022 season, an arrangement extended through 2028. He additionally holds the post of artistic director at the Festival International de Colmar in France.
For the Naïve, Decca, Fuga Libera, and Alpha labels, among others, Altinoglu has recorded with numerous orchestras; his debut release with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony, issued by Alpha in 2024, presented works by Florent Schmitt. As a pianist he accompanied his wife, mezzo-soprano Nora Gubisch, on the 2014 album Folk Songs. He remains on the faculty of the Conservatoire de Paris.
