Biography
Originating from both England and America, the enduring hard rock and heavy metal outfit Alcatrazz came into being during the early 1980s to spotlight U.K. vocalist Graham Bonnet and soon drew attention by exposing listeners to guitarists Yngwie J. Malmsteen and Steve Vai. The ensemble surfaced in 1983 via No Parole from Rock 'n' Roll, which contained the hit "Island in the Sun," then reached its commercial high point in 1985 upon issuing the follow-up Disturbing the Peace, home to their next widely recognized single, "God Blessed Video." One additional studio album appeared, 1986's Dangerous Games, after which the group disbanded the next year. A reunion under the Alcatrazz name took place in 2007 for several concerts, eventually leading back into the recording studio for the 2020 release Born Innocent. Not long afterward the band fractured into separate camps, one led by Bonnet alongside ex-Nevermore guitarist Jeff Loomis while co-founders Jimmy Waldo and Gary Shea guided the other with ex-Rainbow and Michael Schenker vocalist Doogie White handling lead vocals; that latter lineup delivered V in 2021 and Take No Prisoners in 2023.
Having passed the bulk of the 1970s with the Marbles, whose success included the chart single "Only One Woman," plus a modestly prosperous solo path, Lincolnshire-born singer Graham Bonnet received his major opportunity upon being selected to succeed Ronnie James Dio in Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow in 1979. Following the recording of Down to Earth, which featured the major radio success "Since You Been Gone," and headlining the inaugural Castle Donington Monsters of Rock festival during summer 1980, Bonnet found himself abruptly dismissed by the volatile Blackmore. Undeterred, he proceeded to assemble Alcatrazz by enlisting established players—keyboardist Jimmy Waldo, bassist Gary Shea, and drummer Jan Uvena—and aiming to replicate Rainbow's essential sound.
The addition of Swedish guitar prodigy Yngwie J. Malmsteen, already seasoned after several years stateside with Steeler (which included future Keel vocalist Ron Keel), confirmed the project's viability. A declared follower of Blackmore, Malmsteen was then developing his compositional voice, and his partnership with Bonnet produced the strong debut album No Parole from Rock 'n' Roll in 1983. Malmsteen departed Alcatrazz afterward for a solo trajectory, yet the band pressed forward by securing guitar virtuoso Steve Vai, still largely unrecognized despite extensive prior work under avant-rock legend Frank Zappa. Disturbing the Peace from 1985 gained some notice thanks to the single "God Blessed Video," though Vai soon exited to join David Lee Roth's group. Forced once more to locate a guitarist, Alcatrazz brought in Danny Johnson for Dangerous Games in 1986. Discouraged by widespread lack of interest from both audiences and press, the band chose to disband shortly thereafter.
A reconstituted Alcatrazz under Bonnet's direction commenced live appearances in 2007 and maintained that activity through 2014. In 2020, Bonnet, Shea, Waldo, and guitarists Mark Benquechea and Joe Stump issued Born Innocent, the first Alcatrazz studio album in 34 years. Bonnet exited the following year and launched Graham Bonnet's Alcatrazz featuring guitarist Jeff Loomis (Nevermore, Sanctuary). Concurrently, the remaining members persisted as Alcatrazz with new vocalist Doogie White (Michael Schenker, Rainbow, Yngwie Malmsteen), resulting in the studio albums V and Take No Prisoners issued in 2021 and 2023, respectively.
