Biography
Hailing from Ireland, Sweet Savage ranked among the lesser-known acts tied to the New Wave of British Heavy Metal that surfaced in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Guitarist Vivian Campbell made his first appearance in this lineup before moving on to prominent roles with Dio and Def Leppard, while the remaining original members consisted of singer and bassist Ray Haller, drummer David Bates, and guitarist Trevor Fleming. The quartet formed in 1979 yet never released a complete album during its initial run, issuing only the single “Killing Time.” Metallica recorded the track for an early demo, later used it as a B-side, and finally placed it on the 1998 covers collection Garage Inc. Excluding Campbell, the group reconvened in the late ’90s and added guitarist Simon McBride, which yielded the albums Killing Time in 1996 and Rune in 1998.
