During the opening years of the 1990s, Colombian brothers Jorge Ramírez and Sady Ramírez joined forces with vocalists Carolina Ovalle, Jhanio Coronado, and Willy Garcés to create a tropical threesome honoring Sonora Matancera, widely recognized as one of the most prosperous orchestras in Latin music. Alquimia entered the scene with the album Leyenda before issuing the self-produced Leyenda II. After earning acclaim for performances throughout the U.S., the group acquired the nickname "la Sonora del XXI" ("the sound of the 21st Century") and later delivered Tras la Huella, which showcased vocals by Marco Antonio and John Jairo Ibáñez. In time they brought singer Patricia Moncayo into the lineup.
