Biography
Born in Zimbabwe, Edwards began his musical journey performing as a percussionist alongside an oil-drum band, after which he relocated to Zambia to pursue flute studies. Returning to Zimbabwe in the early 1970s, he took on vocal and bass duties with the soul outfit Sabu. He went on to establish his own group, Unity, before relocating again. In 1978 he settled briefly in Zurich, Switzerland, composing material for the Superlove ensemble. Within a year, however, he shifted to Los Angeles to collaborate with Motown Records producer Clay McMurray. Only after moving to England did he launch his solo career in 1981. Landing a deal with Streetwave, the CBS Records subsidiary, he committed to tape several songs written in prior years. One of those tracks, “I Just Wanna (Spend Some Time With You),” reached the UK Top 20 early in 1982. Later singles such as “Take Me” failed to replicate that result.
