Alvin & the Chipmunks ranks among the longest-running and most commercially dominant animated musical franchises, with waves of popularity that began among teenage Baby Boomers in the 1960s, reached new heights in the 1980s as that generation’s children came of age, and maintained momentum well into the twenty-first century.

Ross Bagdasarian entered the world on January 27, 1919, in Fresno, California. He relocated to Los Angeles in 1950 and took on-screen roles in Viva Zapata, Stalag 17, and Rear Window. As a songwriter he first appeared on the charts in 1956 when his production of Alfi & Harry’s “The Trouble with Harry” climbed to number 44. Recording under the name David Seville, he placed two additional solo singles—“Armen’s Theme” and “Gotta Get to Your House”—on the charts. In 1958 he pioneered a technique of capturing ordinary vocals and then accelerating the tape playback; the method produced the chart-topping single “Witch Doctor” early that year. Later in 1958 the holiday novelty “The Chipmunk Song” held the number-one position for four weeks. “Alvin’s Harmonica” reached number three two months afterward, and seasonal re-releases of “The Chipmunk Song” continued to reach the Top 40 for the next four years. The Alvin Show debuted in prime time in 1961, with Bagdasarian supplying every voice; although the series lasted only one season on that schedule, it thrived when moved to Saturday mornings. Five additional Chipmunks singles and five albums, among them a 1964 collection of Beatles covers, also performed strongly during the early 1960s.

Bagdasarian passed away in 1972, yet his son Ross Jr. relaunched Alvin, Simon, and Theodore in 1979 through a Saturday-morning series and the album Chipmunk Punk. The new incarnation surpassed the original’s popularity; subsequent releases featuring country, holiday, rock, and film songs sold briskly even though they did not register on the charts. Although the animated program had ended by the 1990s, fresh recordings continued to appear, including the 1998 collection A-Files: Alien Songs.

A live-action feature film series launched in 2007 with Alvin & the Chipmunks; its box-office performance generated three sequels—Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel in 2009, Alvin & the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked in 2011, and Alvin & the Chipmunks: The Road Chip in 2015. The CGI-animated series ALVINNN!!! and the Chipmunks premiered on Nickelodeon in mid-2015. Its companion soundtrack, We’re the Chipmunks, consisted entirely of original material performed by Alvin, Simon, and Theodore together with the Chipettes. Along with a refreshed version of the show’s main-title theme, the album featured the tracks “Ooh Girl” and “Ring-A-Ding.”
