A very original pianist who displays her gospel roots when she plays organ or sings, Amina Claudine Myers commenced her musical training at age seven. During her school years she performed with gospel ensembles. Following her relocation to Chicago, Myers instructed in the public schools, performed alongside Gene Ammons and Sonny Stitt, and became a member of the AACM. She relocated to New York in 1976, where she later recorded with Lester Bowie and Muhal Richard Abrams; there she also formed her own group, lived for several years in Europe during the early 1980s, and toured in 1985 with Charlie Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra. As a leader, Amina Claudine Myers has documented an eclectic range of material on Sweet Earth, Leo, Black Saint, Minor Music, and Novus.
