Ana Frango Elétrico, a non-binary artist from Rio de Janeiro who works as a singer, songwriter, published poet, multi-instrumentalist, and producer, first appeared under the name Ana Faria Fainguelernt. Elementary-school classmates unable to manage the original pronunciation informally replaced it with Ana Frango Elétrico, or Ana Electric Chicken. The resulting music fuses Brazilian traditions of bossa, MPB, and samba with a contemporary revision of Tropicalia that also incorporates soul, pop, funk, post-punk, and jazz, all delivered through concise tracks built on prominent rhythms, cushioned textures, memorable refrains, and knowing statements voiced in an alto croon. Co-produced with Thiago Nassif, the 2018 debut Mormaço Queim earned the Brazilian Critics Association Award for Musical Revelation of the Year. Little Electric Chicken Heart, issued the next year, merged chamber pop, art pop, indie rock, and a funky update of 21st-century MPB; the record drew widespread critical praise and received a 2020 Latin Grammy nomination for Best Portuguese Language Rock or Alternative Album. In the year that followed, the volume Escoliose: Paralelismo Miúdo appeared, gathering poems, prints, and illustrations made between 2015 and 2019. Additional production credits include the self-titled debut by Brazilian band Sophia Chablau e Uma Enorme Perda de Tempo as well as the 2022 Bala Desejo album Sim Sim Sim. The third full-length, Me Chama de Gato Que Eu Sou Sua, surfaced in 2023 through Mr. Bongo in England, Think! in Japan, and the artist’s own Risco imprint. Conceived in 2021 as an account of coming out and transitioning, the album presents an intimate account of emotional insight into queer love and earned international attention for its precise layering of bossa, funk, boogie, groove, lounge, and present-day urban pop beneath the pointed words of Ana Frango Elétrico.
