Anthony Ramos entered the music scene as a solo artist after honing his craft through performances on Broadway, where his versatile voice effortlessly bridged soul, hip-hop, and classic stage musicals. The dual parts of John Laurens and Phillip Hamilton in Hamilton marked his breakthrough when the production reached Broadway in 2015, after which television and film opportunities quickly materialized in the form of She's Gotta Have It and A Star Is Born. His initial foray into soul-infused R&B arrived with the 2019 album The Good & The Bad, which he followed by issuing multiple singles across the subsequent two years.

Born in 1991 and raised in Bushwick, Brooklyn, Anthony Ramos Martinez completed high school before enrolling at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy, where he finished the theater program in 2011. Regional theater credits soon accumulated, including productions of Grease and In the Heights, along with a national tour of Damn Yankees. While preparing for a Rockettes musical slated for Radio City Music Hall in 2014, he auditioned for Lin-Manuel Miranda's then-developing off-Broadway show Hamilton. That opportunity secured him a spot in both the off-Broadway premiere and the original Broadway company, keeping him with the Tony- and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical from early 2015 through late 2016. The next year brought his role as Mars Blackmon in Spike Lee's Netflix series She's Gotta Have It, which ran from 2017 to 2019.

Timed to mark the first anniversary of Donald Trump's inauguration, Ramos issued his R&B debut recording The Freedom EP on January 20, 2018. Will Wells handled production duties, drawing on prior engineering work for Wu-Tang Clan and Logic as well as contributions to the original Broadway cast recording of Hamilton. Before 2018 concluded, Ramos appeared on screen in the year's A Star Is Born remake alongside Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper. She's Gotta Have It wrapped its final season in May 2019, the same month Godzilla: King of the Monsters reached theaters with Ramos in a supporting part. Later that year he delivered his first full-length project, The Good & The Bad, through Republic Records. Following the 2020 single "Stop," he unveiled several new tracks in 2021, among them "Say Less" and "Blessings."
