Biography
Among the cohort of Dutch specialists on period keyboards who rose to prominence during the 1990s, Arthur Schoonderwoerd occupies a prominent place, distinguished by an unusually extensive recorded output. He has also held a longstanding teaching post at the Conservatory of Barcelona.
Born in Utrecht in 1966, Schoonderwoerd completed his studies at the Utrecht Music Academy under Herman Uhlhorn and Alexander Warenberg while pursuing coursework across concerto performance, chamber music, music education, and musicology. His artistic path has balanced the revival of neglected repertoire with fresh accounts of established works. Upon completing his diploma in 1993, he continued at the Conservatoire de Paris under Jos van Immerseel, attaining command of several historic keyboard instruments. He has become particularly associated with the fortepiano, harpsichord, and clavichord. Two awards conferred in 1996—a Juventus Laureate designation from the Council of Europe and recognition for best individual performance at the Van Wassenaer International Competition for early-music ensembles—propelled his concert career forward. Engagements have taken him regularly to Belgium, Germany, and Italy as well as throughout the Netherlands.
Schoonderwoerd established the Cristofori Ensemble, titled after the piano’s inventor, to explore chamber music written for early pianos, and he has collaborated with vocalists including Johannette Zomer, Hans Jörg Mammel, and Sandrine Piau. His chamber-music partnerships have encompassed duo appearances with Jaap ter Linden, Barthold Kuijken, and Wilbert Hazelzet, among others. Since 2004 he has instructed both keyboard and chamber-music students at the Conservatory of Barcelona.
Schoonderwoerd’s discography is notable for its breadth, beginning with a 1999 recording devoted to keyboard works by Johann Gottfried Eckard. The majority of his releases have appeared on the Alpha and Accent labels, among them a cycle of Mozart piano concertos and a performance of the Mozart Requiem in D minor, K. 626, with the Cristofori Ensemble on Accent. In 2021 he joined the CAvi-Music roster, directing the Cristofori Ensemble from the keyboard in a reduced-instrumentation reading of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 in E flat major, Op. 55 (“Eroica”).
