During the late 1980s, Asdrúbal Trouxe o Trombone mounted its production of Aquela Coisa Toda at Rio’s Ipanema Theater, with Marina Lima booked into the same venue immediately afterward. Personal ties already linked the two ensembles—Ricardo Barreto, who played guitar in Lima’s band, was a cousin of Asdrúbal member Regina Casé—and the convivial Ipanema arts crowd readily mixed. Informal sessions that began as casual recreation ultimately gave rise to Brazilian rock’s first commercially viable expression. When Asdrúbal’s Evandro Mesquita received an invitation to perform at the recently inaugurated bar Caribe, an establishment tied to a well-known clothing retailer, he assembled a lineup that included Barreto, Lobão, Junno Homrich on bass, Zé Luís on saxophone, and Guto Barros on guitar. The venue’s debut took place on 21 February 1981, featuring the ensemble that would shortly adopt the name Blitz.

Asdrúbal Trouxe o Trombone itself had coalesced in Rio during the 1970s and invigorated the city’s theater with its youthful, hedonistic sensibility rooted in Ipanema life. The group’s multimedia presentation A Farra da Terra, which fused poetry, rock, and video imagery, achieved notable success; Caetano Veloso lent his endorsement to the release of its songs on the 1983 album Farra da Terra. One of the collective’s participants, Perfeito Fortuna—previously associated with Os Mutantes during that band’s Rio phase—also helped establish Circo Voador beneath the Arches of Lapa. The space opened on 15 January 1982, operated for three months in its initial incarnation, and, even after later reopening, reshaped Carioca nightlife through appearances by Caetano Veloso, Chico Buarque, and emerging rock acts such as Blitz, Brylho, and Barão Vermelho. Two additional alumni of Asdrúbal Trouxe o Trombone, Luís Fernando Guimarães and Regina Casé, later attained widespread recognition as television and film performers throughout the 1990s and 2000s.
