In his extensive and productive recording career, Noite Ilustrada helped launch numerous enduring standards of Brazilian popular music and scored notable successes with tracks such as "A Flor e o Espinho" (Nelson Cavaquinho/Guilherme de Brito/Alcides Caminha), "O Neguinho e a Senhorita" (Noel Rosa de Oliveira/Abelardo da Silva), "Depois do Carnaval" (Jorge Costa/Paulo Roberto), "Sim" (Cartola/Osvaldo Martins), "Barracão" (Luís Antônio/Oldemar Magalhães), and "Balada NO 7 -- Mané Garrincha" (Alberto Luís). He relocated to Rio de Janeiro during the mid-1950s and became a member of the Portela samba school. Later that decade he settled in São Paulo, performing regularly as a nightclub singer before securing contracts in 1958 with both Rádio Nacional and TV Paulista. That same year he cut his debut single, featuring the samba "Cara de Boboca" (Jaime Silva/Edmundo Andrade) alongside "Castiguei." Four years afterward he finally achieved a major hit with Paulo Vanzolini’s "Volta Por Cima," a piece that quickly became a standard and was covered repeatedly. Also released that year was his first full-length album, O Ilustre.
