British jazz keyboardist Ashley Henry has earned acclaim for his ambitious fusion of jazz and R&B, shaped equally by J Dilla and Stevie Wonder alongside Herbie Hancock and Thelonious Monk. After surfacing on the London scene during the 2010s he collaborated with Zara McFarlane, Moses Boyd, and Anthony Joseph. His 2019 album Beautiful Vinyl Hunter brought broader recognition through its genre-blending approach and appearances by Keyon Harrold and Makaya McCraven. He later established Royal Raw Music and issued the 2024 release Ashley Henry, which included work with Theo Croker and Aja Monet among others.

Henry was born in 1991 in South East London into a musical household and began classical piano lessons near the age of six. He entered competitions as a child and by his teens was picking up favorite pop songs by ear. He attended the BRIT School during this time and in 2011 entered Leeds College of Music, where his focus shifted heavily toward jazz. After completing his studies with a Yamaha Jazz scholarship he returned to London for postgraduate work at the Royal Academy of Music. Live performances soon led to projects alongside numerous British jazz figures, among them Zara McFarlane, Anthony Joseph, Luke Flowers, Moses Boyd, and Jean Toussaint. His first recording as a leader arrived with the 2017 acoustic quintet album 5ive, followed the next year by the Easter EP, which highlighted the more eclectic direction of his RE:Ensemble and its R&B and electronic leanings.

Wider attention came in 2019 with Beautiful Vinyl Hunter, an album that continued to merge jazz and R&B while hosting equally exploratory peers such as Keyon Harrold, Makaya McCraven, Theo Croker, and Binker & Moses. The project received critical praise, earned a nomination for BBC 6 Music’s Album of the Year, and secured Henry an opening slot on tour with Christine and the Queens. In 2023 he formed his own Royal Raw Music imprint through a partnership with Believe International and released the self-titled full-length Ashley Henry in 2024. That set once more drew on contributions from Croker, Aja Monet, Judi Jackson, Mak., and Binker Golding.
