A London-based ensemble called Nérija operates as a women-led jazz collective whose music incorporates the forceful, propulsive hard bop style associated with the 1960s alongside funk, soul, and hip-hop. The musicians first surfaced in 2016 and earned acclaim through appearances at festivals and venues, after which they released their initial full-length recording, the 2019 album Blume.

The collective took shape in 2016 while its participants were enrolled as students in the London jazz program Tomorrow's Warriors Female Collective. Its original lineup featured trumpeter Sheila Maurice-Grey, trombonist Rosie Turton, saxophonists Cassie Kinoshi and Nubya Garcia, guitarist Shirley Tetteh, bassist Inga Eichler, and drummer Lizy Exell. After completing their studies with Tomorrow's Warriors, the members began performing live and appeared at events such as Latitude, Brainchild, Manchester Jazz Festival, and Jazz Re:Fest; they also received a nomination for Jazz FM's Breakthrough Act of the Year award in 2016. The Domino label issued their EP Nérija in March 2019, with the full-length debut Blume arriving that August.
