London's Kamaal Williams works as a skilled keyboardist, DJ, and producer whose sound merges an affinity for 1970s jazz fusion and funk with present-day hip-hop and electronic dance music elements. Within the thriving South London milieu he occupies a distinctive position among jazz musicians, rappers, and DJs because of his approachable, smoothly rhythmic approach. Following the 2018 appearance of his first solo album The Return he secured a presence in international club environments. Although active in multiple ensembles from the mid-2000s onward, he first drew widespread notice in 2016 through his role in the jazz-funk duo Yussef Kamaal alongside drummer Yussef Dayes, whose 2016 release Black Focus earned critical acclaim. After that partnership he launched a solo trajectory with the stylistically comparable 2018 album The Return.

Born Henry Wu in South London, he was raised in a multicultural household by a Taiwanese mother and a British father, both employed in graphic design. Under their guidance he acquired some Mandarin during childhood and also studied Muslim calligraphy, later employing the latter skill while working as a graffiti artist. In his teenage years music became his central focus; he performed percussion in the school ensemble. An early enthusiasm for the garage/grime duo Oxide & Neutrino steered him toward hip-hop, while his father simultaneously exposed him to jazz and fusion recordings by Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Carlos Santana. He subsequently explored acid jazz acts such as Brand New Heavies and Incognito.

Upon completing high school Wu found steady work as a keyboardist across various London funk outfits and joined the backing band of dubstep singer Katy B, remaining with the group for two years. Around 2011 he departed that ensemble, embraced Islam, and adopted the name Kamaal Williams. He then affiliated with the artist-operated 22a label and commenced self-production, fusing his jazz interests with house and electronic broken beat textures. Near 2016 he connected with drummer Yussef Dayes and established the jazz-funk duo Yussef Kamaal.

Following the dissolution of that collaboration, Williams reemerged in 2018 with the solo debut The Return, refining his jazz-funk and electronic synthesis alongside drummer Joshua McKenzie (aka MckNasty), bassist Pete Martin, and sound engineer Richard Samuels. Early in 2019 he issued the 12" single "New Heights (Visions of Aisha Malik)" backed with "Snitches Brew." The A-side, co-produced with Darkhouse Family, paired an elastic bassline with Williams' looping, groove-centered keyboard work, while the B-side presented an intense, psychedelic funk atmosphere featuring guitarist Mansur Brown, previously associated with Yussef Kamaal. Later that year Williams compiled a volume in the respected DJ-Kicks series; conceived as an homage to London's underground milieu, the mix blended broken beat, house, jazz, and drum'n'bass.

In May 2020 he revealed plans for his second album on the Black Focus imprint. Titled Wu Hen, the project featured core contributions from drummer Greg Paul, bassist Rick Leon James, and saxophonist Quinn Mason, with Miguel Atwood-Ferguson supplying strings on three tracks and harpist Alina Bzhezhinska also participating. Singer/songwriter and producer Lauren Faith appeared on the single "Hold On." Wu Hen reached the public in July 2020.
