Biography
Vancouver musician Ashley Webber leads the Ashley Shadow project, whose intimate, noir-tinted compositions blend with her soulful and smoky vocal approach. Before issuing her first solo recording, the 2016 album Ashley Shadow, she supplied vocals to releases by Bonnie "Prince" Billy and the Cave Singers. Will Oldham, the artist behind Bonnie "Prince" Billy, later guested on her sophomore effort Only the End, issued in 2021.
Well before adopting the Shadow name, Webber performed on bass in the post-punk band the Organ. Founded in 2001, the group put out several EPs plus the 2004 full-length Grab That Gun until her departure in 2005. Across the following decade she lent her voice to an array of respected acts, among them the Pink Mountaintops on 2006's Axis of Evol and 2009's Outside Love, Bonnie "Prince" Billy on 2008's Lie Down in the Light, and the Cave Singers on 2009's Welcome Joy.
Webber joined the roster of Felte Records for her self-titled Ashley Shadow debut, produced by Joshua Wells of Black Mountain and Lightning Dust—the latter a duo with her sister Amber Webber—and released in April 2016. She reunited with Wells to cut her second album Only the End, which surfaced on Felte in September 2021 and contained a duet with Bonnie "Prince" Billy titled "Don't Slow Me Down".
