Babebee, a singer/songwriter and visual artist pulling from hyperpop, alt-rock, and K-pop, confronts profound emotions and ideas across the self-released trilogy Portal of My Soul, Body, and Mind Over Matter that appeared in 2021 and 2022, then widens the sonic range further on the 2023 projects Tainted in Our Memories and A Prophecy.

Born and raised in Atlanta to Korean parents, Babebee started composing songs at the piano while still young and later auditioned for K-pop idol roles during adolescence. Launching music as Babebee in 2021 allowed the artist’s scattered influences to coalesce into something difficult to categorize. Glitchy textures rooted in hyperpop, paired with distorted alt-rock guitars and vocals delivered in both English and Korean, were accompanied by ethereal visual work as the early releases examined weighty themes. The 2021 debut album Portal of My Soul tested the edges of perceived ethnic and gender identities; the same year’s EP Body examined sensuality, romance, and sexual abuse; and 2022’s Mind Over Matter presented a stark, lo-fi meditation on psychological pain and existentialism.

Once tracks such as “go-stop,” “nervous system breakdown,” and “Backwards”—a 2022 non-LP collaboration with Runner Boy—drew dedicated listeners, Babebee pushed sonic boundaries even wider throughout 2023. The EP Tainted in Our Memories addressed emotionally intense subjects including toxic relationships and self-destructive behavior through a tightly focused alt-pop lens. That same year’s follow-up A Prophecy, released on Epitaph Records, introduced additional shimmering keyboard and guitar layers alongside direct, heartfelt lyrics. The connection with Epitaph continued in 2024 through the upbeat hyperpop track “Go, Go / 가자!,” performed in both English and Korean.
