Ballboy issued their first full-length effort, Club Anthems, in 2001, surrounded by the same wave of anticipation, critical affection and studied delicacy that had earlier surrounded their Scottish predecessors Belle & Sebastian. The Edinburgh quartet comprises Gordon McIntyre on vocals, guitar and lyrics, Nick Reynolds on bass, Katie Griffiths on keyboards and backing vocals, and Gary Morgan on drums. After signing with SL Records in 1999, the band delivered its initial EP that November and continued to issue one EP annually thereafter, prompting the label to release the Club Anthems LP in 2001. UK Radio One presenter and taste arbiter John Peel championed the group, naming its track “Olympic Cyclist” among his standout songs of 2000 and later summoning Ballboy to tape one of his celebrated sessions. Manifesto handled American distribution of Club Anthems in the first months of 2002. Outside the band, Gordon and Katie work as school teachers, Nick serves as a nurse, and Gary works as a sound technician.
