Biography
Sambassadeur, based in Gothenberg, ranked among Sweden's many accomplished indie pop outfits throughout the 2000s. Their output delivers wistful, atmospheric textures that echo the Go-Betweens, Belle & Sebastian, and the Magnetic Fields, acts the band members name as key influences alongside less conventional reference points such as Wire and France Gall.
The group originated in fall 2003 when guitarist/songwriter Joachim Läckberg, vocalist/guitarist Anna Persson, and guitarist/vocalist Daniel Permbo met while studying in Skövde. An impromptu evening recording session prompted the trio to create their first composition, "There You Go." Bassist Daniel Tolergård joined shortly afterward, finalizing the lineup.
Live shows began the following spring, supported by a CD of prerecorded beats for percussion duties. After relocating to Gothenburg, Sambassadeur issued two self-released CDs and a 7" on Dolores, then signed with Labrador late in 2004. The Between the Lines EP appeared in 2005 as their initial release on the label. That spring the band also secured a deal with AC30 for U.K. distribution and performed their first London date. Summer 2005 brought the official self-titled debut album and additional touring throughout Sweden and the U.K. The Coastal Affairs EP surfaced in 2006; its track "Kate" later featured in a Payless Shoes commercial aired in the U.S. that summer.
