Emerging from Stockholm during the mid-2000s, indie outfit Shout Out Louds attracted notice through an appealing style whose range stretched from intimate, ringing guitar pop to more expansive, film-like textures. Their 2007 release Our Ill Wills climbed into Sweden’s Top Ten, whereas the 2010 follow-up Work—produced by Phil Ek—opened doors for the group across the United States. Although later output arrived at a measured pace, each new album examined another side of Shout Out Louds’ sonic range, moving from the exploratory pop of 2013’s Optica to the unhurried introspection of 2017’s Ease My Mind. Issued in 2022, House extended the pattern by blending hazy new-wave guitar textures with bright melodies.

Formed in 2001 by childhood companions Adam Olenius on vocals and guitar, Ted Malmros on bass, and Carl von Arbin on guitars, the band soon welcomed drummer Eric Edman and keyboardist and singer Bebban Stenborg. An early demo tape reached Filip Wilén, proprietor of Sweden’s Bud Fox Recordings, who signed the group. Shout Out Louds devoted most of 2002 to writing and tracking material, then introduced themselves in early 2003 via the 100° EP. Their debut album Howl Howl Gaff Gaff followed in October, bringing the band’s high-energy, ultra-melodic approach to a broader listenership. Extensive touring ensued alongside further releases such as “Please Please Please,” “Very Loud/Wish I Was Dead,” and the Oh, Sweetheart EP, culminating in a U.S. contract with Capitol Records. The American edition of Howl Howl Gaff Gaff appeared in May 2005, combining tracks from the Swedish version with selected early singles and EP cuts.

A U.S. tour alongside indie darlings the Dears raised the band’s profile, reinforced by song placements on series including The O.C. Even with mounting visibility, the 2007 album Our Ill Wills—produced by Björn Yttling of Peter Björn and John—proved a somber, melancholy work filled with icy synths and vocals recalling the Cure. Continued road work occupied the members until mid-2008, when they chose a six-month break. Upon regrouping in Stockholm to compose, the band traveled to Seattle to record with American producer Phil Ek, whose credits include Fleet Foxes and the Shins.

Now signed to prominent indie label Merge Records in the U.S., Shout Out Louds delivered their more streamlined third album Work in early 2010; it briefly entered the Billboard 200 while performing strongly in Sweden. After another demanding tour cycle, the musicians sought a revised creative process. Aiming to restore the relaxed atmosphere of earlier sessions, they composed outside the studio, each member preparing individual parts before reconvening. Self-producing—with assistance from Johannes Berglund—in a modest Stockholm space, they issued Optica on Merge in early 2013, a record at once freer and more daring.

Subsequent years brought solo work from Olenius and Stenborg’s Astropol project before the full band reassembled in Stockholm for their fifth album. Ease My Mind, released in 2017, reflected a deliberate turn toward mellow, introspective songwriting in response to the unsettled global climate. Five additional years elapsed before Shout Out Louds resurfaced in early 2022 with House, a darker collection marked by new-wave undertones.
