The 2000s rock era will likely dedicate significant space to the rise of expansive musical collectives rather than fixed, intimate groups. Among notable instances like Broken Social Scene from Canada and the Envelopes spanning Europe, the Swedish outfit I'm from Barcelona, with origins in Jönköping, stands out for assembling 29 participants on their initial EP, which showcased bright, communal pop melodies alongside a diverse array of instruments.

This EP emerged from a spontaneous project facilitated by Sweden's supportive employment policies. Emanuel Lundgren utilized his four-week paid holiday from regular employment to gather acquaintances, few of whom pursued music professionally, for a homegrown recording session throughout summer 2005. Captured within Lundgren's residence and various outdoor locations in Jönköping, the effort culminated in an inaugural and seemingly final show, adopting a moniker drawn haphazardly from the British series Fawlty Towers, specifically Manuel's signature line.

Upon self-issuing the EP under the title Sing!! during August, strong public interest led to a contract with EMI's Swedish division that same year. Their style, characterized by uplifting group harmonies, pop arrangements incorporating brass, stringed folk elements, and squeezeboxes, drew parallels to the Polyphonic Spree, Sufjan Stevens, and the Flaming Lips, quickly cultivating a dedicated following through digital channels.

Early in 2006 saw the arrival of Don't Give Up on Your Dreams, Buddy! EP, highlighted by the track "We're from Barcelona," paving the way for the debut album Let Me Introduce My Friends months afterward.

Performances varied based on availability among the 29, with occasional stripped-down electronic sets by Lundgren alongside Adventure Kid. The complete lineup convened for the more somber Who Killed Harry Houdini?, issued in 2008. That autumn, 27 participants embarked on European dates promoting the record while developing 27 Songs from Barcelona, assigning one composition to each member, which appeared in 2010.

Subsequently, the band produced Forever Today, their next studio effort, through a pair of live recordings released in 2011.
