The Embassy, a Swedish duo, crafts an eclectic mix of pop styles through light, energetic, and rhythmic music. Their approach begins with synth pop in the vein of New Order before folding in touches of space age bachelor pad, electronic dance, disco, and faint pub rock. This layered production aesthetic aligns with their playful outlook, sustained through live shows packed with antics and a steady flow of recordings that began with the 2002 debut full-length Futile Crimes and reached the fifth studio album E-Numbers more than twenty years later in 2023.

Formed in Gothenburg in 1999 by guitarist/vocalist Fredrik Lindson and keyboardist/programmer Torbjörn Håkansson, the group first presented its signature fusion of breezy electronic pop and New Order-inspired dance-rock on a run of singles and then on the 2002 debut album Futile Crimes. Their iconoclastic streak surfaced early when they appeared onstage with cardboard replicas of instruments while using backing tracks. Further singles and EPs arrived between 2003 and 2005, after which the 2005 sophomore album Tacking reinforced the band’s self-described “Underclass Disco” approach. Traces of their style soon surfaced among emerging Swedish indie acts, yet the duo halted new releases for several years, expressing doubt about the traditional album format. That interval ended with the club-tinged 2013 album Sweet Sensation. The fourth album, White Lake, followed in 2018 and contained eight songs recorded entirely on Skype. Sporadic singles and EPs kept the group intermittently visible until the fifth album E-Numbers appeared in 2023.
