Tobias Isaksson, a highly productive and gifted figure in Swedish indie pop previously associated with Laurel Music and Irene, runs Azure Blue as his individual venture. Working independently across efforts such as the 2011 release Rule of Thirds and the 2015 album Beneath the Hill I Smell the Sea, he shaped an ever more polished sound rooted in synth pop and often drew in vocalists from Sweden’s indie pop scene. Following side ventures including Nite Flights and Personal Trainers, Isaksson resumed Azure Blue activity with further recordings, among them the 2019 cinematic album Images of You and the 2024 set The Night of the Stars.

Merging the sleek synth pop textures of the 1980s with the refined elegance of Bryan Ferry’s solo recordings and the precise observational lyrics of Robert Forster and Grant McLennan from the Go-Betweens, Azure Blue’s debut full-length Rule of Thirds appeared in late 2011 via the Swedish label Hybris and the U.S. imprint Matinée. The record resonated with critics and listeners, securing a Swedish Independent Grammy Award for Best Album. Two years afterward Isaksson delivered the still more polished Beyond the Dreams There’s Infinite Doubt on the same two labels together with the U.K. imprint Fika. That album earned critical acclaim and a 2013 Gaffa Award nomination for Best Swedish Album, while Isaksson himself received a nomination for Best Swedish Solo Artist. He next turned to remixes and launched the project Nite Flights, issuing the two EPs Nite Flights and Solar in 2014 with a pronounced space-disco focus. Later the same year he opened a recording studio, formed the disco duo Personal Trainers alongside Peter Bjorn and John’s Peter Morén, and resumed Azure Blue work.

The Every Ending Story EP emerged first in May 2015, followed by the third Azure Blue album. Issued by Hybris and Fika, Beneath the Hill I Smell the Sea concluded a planned trilogy and included seven guest vocalists such as Amanda Mair, the Caesars’ César Vidal, and Sportsman’s Per Magnusson. Azure Blue reappeared in early 2018 with the six-track Whatever ’18 EP, which incorporated contributions from César Vidal, the Land Below, Peter Morén, Charly A, and Bo; the EP also contained the title track that previewed the full-length Fast Falls the Eventide, issued later that summer. In 2019 the lush and romantic Images of You arrived as Isaksson’s fifth Azure Blue album. Five years passed before the next release, the richly detailed 2024 album The Night of the Stars. Its ten songs showcased some of Isaksson’s most opulent and melodic arrangements yet, with guest spots from SMIDVIK, Paola, and returning collaborator the Land Below.
