Biography
Hailing from Birkenhead in Merseyside, England, the duo of Desa and Nick Murphy first attracted notice in 1991 through the single ‘Is There Anybody Out There?’, which entered the UK Top 10. Legal challenges quickly arose from Afrika Bambaataa, the Osmonds, Pink Floyd, and Talking Heads’ representatives concerning the samples employed. Later releases ‘Back To The Old School’ and ‘Who Can Make You Feel Good’ stayed true to their driving house and sample-based approach. By the time their debut album appeared in 1993, the Bassheads had moved toward the ambient house sound led by the Orb and Aphex Twin. A 24-minute centerpiece titled ‘C.O.D.E.’ formed the heart of the record and recalled the work of Brian Eno and Talking Heads. (NB: Not to be confused with the 90s US rap crew Bass Headz.)
