Biography
Brian DeGraw helped establish the New York techno-punks Gang Gang Dance as one of its founding members after first honing his skills in angular punk outfits on the Washington, D.C. scene during the late ’90s. Prior to settling in New York and co-founding Gang Gang Dance in 2001, he performed with groups such as the Cranium and later joined SSAB Songs, the experimental ensemble directed by filmmaker Harmony Korine. Beyond shaping much of the electronic textures and rhythmic drive within Gang Gang Dance, DeGraw frequently served as a DJ, worked alongside fellow musicians, and supplied remixes for acts including Battles, Tempers, and Animal Collective. Adopting the elongated monogram bEEdEEgEE in 2013, he issued his debut solo album Sum/One through 4AD—the same imprint that had already put out multiple Gang Gang Dance releases. Guest vocal contributions on the record came from members of Hot Chip, CSS, and additional artists, after which DeGraw supported the project by opening for Animal Collective on a run of dates in early winter 2013.
