Biography
The atmospheric, melancholy, and faintly medieval textures crafted by Bel Canto—an Italian phrase signifying “beautiful song”—fuse a core of synth-driven chamber rock with an eclectic array of orchestral and folk instrumentation. Originating in Norway, the ensemble launched as a trio anchored by the ethereal vocals of Anneli Drecker alongside Nils Johansen and Geir Jenssen. The members have cited inspiration from potent energy fields, among them those emanating from the feminine and the planet’s gravitational force. Their 1987 debut, White-Out Conditions, introduced an abstract synth-pop approach that later expanded into neo-classical and dance-inflected territory on the 1992 release Shimmering, Warm & Bright. Subsequent outings exploring trip-hop grooves, notably 1998’s Rush, preceded an extended hiatus, after which the group resurfaced in 2024 with the lush, majestic Radiant Green.
Bel Canto came together in Tromsø, Norway, during 1985. The following year they relocated to Brussels, becoming among the earliest Norwegian acts to secure an international deal by joining Crammed Discs. Their inaugural album, White-Out Conditions, appeared in 1987 and quickly prompted comparisons to Kate Bush, Dead Can Dance, and Cocteau Twins. After the darker 1989 album Birds of Passage, which nevertheless introduced more danceable rhythms on select tracks, Jenssen departed to pursue a distinguished solo career under the Biosphere moniker in ambient techno. Drecker and Johansen settled in Oslo and continued as a duo, issuing the widely praised Shimmering, Warm & Bright in 1992. They signed with Atlantic for 1996’s Magic Box, which featured contributions from bassist Jah Wobble, former Can drummer Jaki Liebezeit, trumpeter Nils Petter Molvær, and steel guitarist B.J. Cole. The record yielded the band’s biggest single, the funky, trip-hop-tinged “Rumour,” which climbed to the Norwegian Top 20 and was reworked by Masters at Work into a Top Ten U.S. club success.
Two further Europe-only EMI releases, 1998’s Rush and 2002’s Dorothy’s Victory, sustained the duo’s blend of alternative dance and dream pop. By then Drecker had already issued her debut solo album; in tandem with that career she toured extensively with Röyksopp and a-ha while serving as a jury member on the Norwegian Pop Idol in 2004. Johansen produced for other artists and issued an album with the folk collective Vajas in 2006. Bel Canto reconvened for a retrospective concert in Oslo in 2017 and confirmed work on a new album in 2022. The self-released Radiant Green emerged in 2024, with Jenssen contributing to two tracks, among them “Virginia” featuring Sondre Lerche.
