Biff Byford rose to prominence as the frontman of the British heavy metal band Saxon, yet his path through the wider metal landscape also includes numerous collaborations, guest appearances, and his first solo effort, the 2020 album School of Hard Knocks.

Raised in Yorkshire, England, amid the region’s industrial and mining core, he spent his early working life in local pits. While employed there, a friend introduced him to the guitar; he later switched to bass and performed with several area groups. In 1973 he launched the power trio Coast alongside drummer Al Dodd and guitarist Paul Quinn, the latter of whom would eventually join Saxon. The band endured only a few years before disbanding, after which Byford, Quinn, Graham Oliver, and Pete Gill formed the original lineup of Saxon. Their self-titled debut arrived in 1979, establishing the group as a key participant in the New Wave of British Heavy Metal alongside Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, and Diamond Head.

Serving as Saxon’s central creative force, Byford guided the band through the 1980s and 1990s, securing eight straight U.K. Top 40 album entries via titles such as Wheels of Steel, Denim and Leather, and Crusader. In the early 2000s the group fractured, with Oliver and former bassist Steve Dawson assembling a separate version of Saxon. Byford retained leadership of the original lineup into the 2010s, attracting a fresh listenership. Throughout this period he contributed guest vocals to releases by other metal artists, among them Helloween, Doro, and Avantasia. In 2019 he began work on his own debut solo record, enlisting Phil Campbell, Cradle of Filth’s Nicholas Barker, and Saxon’s Nibbs Carter; School of Hard Knocks reached listeners early the following year.
