Originally hailing from England, Billie Myers entered popular music in 1997 via her first album, Growing, Pains. Her singing blends elements of pop, jazz, and world music, a fusion she achieved after starting to write poetry in childhood and later bridging the longstanding divide between verse and mainstream songwriting to create unified, approachable tracks. With an English mother and Jamaican father, Myers did not pursue music early on; prior to her recording debut she worked as a nurse and insurance agent back home. Producer Peter Harris first encountered her at a dance club, where her appearance and movement prompted him to inquire whether she could also sing. Shortly after that introduction she began composing songs for Growing, Pains, which veteran rock icon Desmond Child went on to produce. Its lead track, “Kiss the Rain,” rose swiftly into the Top 20. Myers joined Universal Records in 1997, performed on the Lilith Fair circuit during summer 1998, and mounted her own headlining tour that same period. Additional singles from Growing, Pains later surfaced in television commercials and on the series Dawson’s Creek. The album earned gold certification in 1997, while her next project, Vertigo, reached listeners in mid-2000.
