Biography
Born Deseree Annette Weekes in South London, the performer later known as Des'ree wove affirmations of romance and contemporary urban existence into a midtempo sound that fused reggae, calypso, rap, and British pop through memorable hooks. This approach elevated her among the leading figures of British R&B during the 1990s, as evidenced by projects such as I Ain't Movin' and Supernatural. Her longest-lasting success arrived through the global reach of "You Gotta Be," after which she withdrew from recording in the early 2000s, resurfacing only in 2019 with her fifth album, A Love Story.
An early commitment to a music career led to a recording contract in 1991. Issued that August, the debut single "Feel So High" initially drew limited notice, yet gained traction once Mind Adventures, her first LP, appeared in early 1992. A 1992 collaboration with Terence Trent D'Arby on "Delicate" reached the U.K. Top Ten and introduced her to listeners in the United States. The duet directly preceded the 1994 release of I Ain't Movin', which attained platinum certification largely on the strength of the hit single "You Gotta Be." That inspirational track logged 80 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, climbed to number five, and secured the summit in Canada and across Europe. Momentum continued with an American tour in 1995 and a historic appearance at the Vatican’s first secular concert.
Later releases—Supernatural (1998), Endangered Species (2000), and Dream Soldier (2003)—did not match earlier commercial heights, although a dedicated audience remained. After Dream Soldier, Des'ree stepped back to concentrate on family and her practice as a nutritionist while making sporadic performances into the 2010s. She reentered the market in late 2019 with A Love Story.
