Biography
Teedra Moses stands out among present-day R&B vocalists and songwriters for her skillful merging of emotional openness with steely resolve. Raised in Louisiana before moving to California, she first reached listeners in 2004 by co-writing Christina Milian’s Top Ten pop single “Dip It Low” and by issuing her own striking debut album Complex Simplicity. Though only one additional studio album, 2015’s Cognac & Conversation, has appeared under her name, she has continued issuing mixtapes, EPs, and standalone tracks through 2024, when she revisited the introspective title cut from her initial LP alongside Durand Bernarr. Her extensive list of featured appearances includes a contribution to Kaytranada’s Grammy-winning set Bubba.
After her parents separated, Moses left New Orleans for California with her mother. Early immersion in gospel, shaped by her mother’s past work on the Southern revival circuit, informed the impassioned delivery she later brought to her own material once she transitioned from styling wardrobes for Will Smith and Kelis into writing and performing. Her first TVT single, “Be Your Girl,” surfaced in 2003, yet mainstream exposure arrived the next year when Christina Milian’s “Dip It Low,” co-penned by Moses, climbed to number five on the U.S. pop chart. Further sessions with Poli Paul, the producer behind both that track and “Be Your Girl,” yielded the tougher “You’ll Never Find (A Better Woman)” featuring Jadakiss. Light gospel inflections continued to color her mature, soul-centered contemporary R&B on Complex Simplicity, released by TVT in July 2004; the project peaked at number 20 on Billboard’s R&B/hip-hop chart and number 168 on the Billboard 200.
Among the album’s notable moments was “Take Me,” a duet with Raphael Saadiq. Moses reciprocated by appearing on Saadiq’s Ray Ray, initiating a string of outside projects that followed her debut. In subsequent years she lent vocals to tracks and supplied songs for Teairra Mari, Trina, Mary J. Blige, Macy Gray, and again Milian, while sporadically dropping mixtapes and singles and enjoying a brief association with Rick Ross’ Maybach Music.
Following further independent output such as “Secrets of Life” and the California Vibes EP, Moses returned with a full-length effort on Shanachie, Cognac & Conversation, which arrived in August 2015 and also reached number 20 on the R&B/hip-hop chart. A steady flow of collaborations and one-off singles continued across the ensuing decade. She notably joined Kaytranada’s Grammy-winning 2019 album Bubba; years earlier Kaytranada had cultivated an underground audience with his remix of “Be Your Girl,” later issued commercially. Moses collaborated with Salaam Remi and D-Nice on “Black Love” in 2020, issued the slow jam “Make Me” in 2021, and, three years later, marked the twentieth anniversary of Complex Simplicity by reworking its title track with fellow Kaytranada associate Durand Bernarr.
