Known for her commanding vocal presence and unflinching songwriting, Grammy-nominated Syleena Johnson has maintained a distinctive career in R&B as both an arranger and producer. Born in Harvey, Illinois, the daughter of the underrecognized soul singer Syl Johnson, she absorbed the sounds of Aretha Franklin, Al Green, Tina Turner, the Dells, and Mavis Staples during her formative years. Early performances included local bands and the choir at Greater Christian Unity church, followed by involvement in classical, gospel, and jazz groups while studying music at Drake University and Illinois State University.

Her gritty, old-school timbre shaped a body of introspective material. Initial tracks surfaced on a mid-’90s duet album with her father, yet her first standalone project arrived with Love Hangover (1999), which included interpretations of Diana Ross’ “Love Hangover” and Womack & Womack’s “Baby I’m Scared of You.” Three subsequent releases on the Jive imprint each entered the Top 20 of Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop albums chart. Chapter 1: Love, Pain & Forgiveness (2001) addressed personal relationships and growth through appearances by Buddy Guy and R. Kelly. After Chapter 2: The Voice (2002) and Chapter 3: The Flesh (2005), she joined fellow Chicago native Kanye West on the Grammy-nominated Top Ten Hot 100 single “All Falls Down,” though the track’s momentum did not translate into greater sales for her own album. Her Jive years were later summarized on the 2008 anthology I Am Your Woman: The Best of Syleena Johnson.

Operating independently, Johnson issued Chapter 4: Labor Pains (2009) and joined Lalah Hathaway, Indira Khan, and Lisa Simone for the Daughters of Soul tour. Following Chapter 5: Underrated (2011) on the Shanachie label, she joined the cast of TV One’s R&B Divas: Atlanta and contributed to the accompanying R&B Divas (2012) album. She then partnered with Musiq Soulchild and producer Kemar McGregor on 9ine (2013), a collection of modern reggae duets. Chapter 6: Couples Therapy (2014), released via Blakbyrd, was shaped largely through work with Pierre Medor and Kriss Johnson.

Rebirth of Soul (2017) presented classic covers chosen and tracked alongside her father, among them Syl’s own “Is It Because I’m Black.” For the first time she captured vocals live on the studio floor accompanied by musicians, with Syl producing alongside veteran Chicago session players drawn from his earlier recordings. In the accompanying press materials Syleena stated: "I wanted to honor him and classic soul music during a time when Auto-Tune and electronic beats reign supreme."
