Biography
Musiq Soulchild built a lasting career on a bedrock of classic soul and organic hip-hop, paired with an inherently romantic and approachable everyman persona that earned him decades of recognition. Arriving after Philadelphia peers such as D'Angelo, Maxwell, and Erykah Badu had already carved space outside the prevailing pop-leaning urban contemporary format, the singer and songwriter quickly set himself apart as the new millennium began. Early singles "Just Friends (Sunny)" and "Love" both cracked the Top 40, fueling the million-selling debut Aijuswanaseing (2000) and launching a run of four platinum or gold albums that encompassed the Grammy-nominated Juslisen (2002) and Luvanmusiq (2007). After issuing six projects via Def Jam and Atlantic, he shifted to independent releases yet maintained momentum, securing a third Grammy nomination for Best R&B Album with Feel the Real (2017) and later collaborating with producer Hit-Boy on Victims & Villains (2023).
Philadelphia native Taalib Johnson absorbed an education in 1970s soul within his childhood home. Initially uninterested in pursuing a professional music path, the young performer took every available opportunity to sing, whether on city streets, inside schools, or within gallery spaces. He sharpened his live skills at open-mike nights and at showcases held by the Five Spot and Wilhemina's before managers Jerome Hipps and Michael McArthur, known collectively as Mama's Boys, secured him a contract with Def Jam's Def Soul imprint. Johnson entered the market in 2000 via "Just Friends (Sunny)," which debuted on the Nutty Professor II: The Klumps soundtrack, climbed the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop chart by September, peaked at number six (number 31 on the pop side), and appeared on Aijuswanaseing two months afterward. Much of the album was tracked at DJ Jazzy Jeff's A Touch of Jazz facility in Philadelphia; it also housed "Love," which reached number two on the R&B chart (number 24 pop) in December. Penned with Carvin Haggins and Andre Harris and produced by Harris alongside Vidal Davis, the track helped push the project to platinum certification and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.
Johnson's follow-up, Juslisen, arrived in May 2002 under the shortened billing Musiq and reflected noticeable artistic growth that translated into stronger commercial results. The set opened at number one on both the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and Billboard 200 charts while spawning two Top Ten R&B singles. Soulstar followed that December, eventually attaining gold status before concluding his association with Def Soul. A trade that sent him to Atlantic in exchange for rapper Fabolous kept him active; Luvanmusiq (March 2007), OnMyRadio (December 2008), and MusiqintheMagiq (May 2011) each refined his seasoned approach and either led or nearly led the R&B/Hip-Hop chart. Although the albums largely favored a relaxed, ballad-heavy tone, the period's major uptempo successes "B.U.D.D.Y." and "Anything" drew from 1981 post-disco tracks—Taana Gardner's "Heartbeat" and Central Line's "Walking into Sunshine," respectively.
Stepping away from major-label structures, Johnson joined Syleena Johnson and producer Kemar McGregor for 9ine, a collection of nine contemporary reggae duets captured across nine days and issued on Shanachie in September 2013. Through My Block, the eOne imprint run by longtime associate Warryn Campbell, he delivered his seventh studio album, Life on Earth, in April 2016. Despite a five-year gap since his prior solo release, urban AC radio embraced the ballad "I Do," marking his tenth Top 20 R&B/hip-hop single. Feel the Real arrived the next September; buoyed by the number 11 R&B/hip-hop hit "Start Over," it became his third LP nominated for a Grammy in the Best R&B Album category. In subsequent years he co-wrote and appeared on T3's "Once Upon a Time" and James Vickery's "Come to Me." Most recently he partnered with producer Hit-Boy for the concise, forward-looking R&B project Victims & Villains, released in March 2023.
