From the outset of his recording career with the 1996 release My Heart, the multifaceted artist Donell Jones, who handles singing, songwriting, and production duties, delivered an urban pop sound infused with jazz and soul elements under the LaFace Records banner, achieving several moderately successful singles along the way. His initial pair of releases, namely "In the Hood" along with "Knocks Me Off My Feet," helped solidify his standing in the crowded urban music scene. Particularly noteworthy was the second of these tracks, a cover of Stevie Wonder's composition originally appearing on the 1976 album Songs in the Key of Life, which achieved significant commercial traction for Jones by ascending to prominent positions on the Billboard R&B chart and thereby boosting the album's chart performance correspondingly. Beyond creating his personal recordings, Jones also crafted material for fellow urban performers including Usher with the track "Think of You" and 702 via "Get It Together."

As the offspring of a gospel singer, Jones engaged deeply with musical pursuits from an early stage in his life. Subsequently, he encountered the allure of illicit activities in Chicago's South Side, the area of his upbringing. Having once participated in gang-related activities, he ultimately chose to commit fully to a musical path instead of continuing along street-oriented endeavors. His introduction to Edward "Eddie F" Ferrell, who had previously been a member of Heavy D & the Boyz and later assumed the role of president at Untouchables Entertainment, led to a collaborative alliance with LaFace. In the wake of the 1994 R&B chart achievement at number eight for Usher's "Think of You," which Jones had authored, the LaFace label heads L.A. Reid and Babyface authorized the emerging talent to commence production on his own debut project. With Ferrell, Reid, and Babyface serving as executive producers, My Heart reached the number 30 spot on Billboard's R&B chart during 1996, fueled mainly through the impact of "Knocks Me Off My Feet" in conjunction with the additional singles "In the Hood" and "You Should Know."

Upon his reemergence after a three-year interval in 1999 via the album Where I Wanna Be, Jones had earned recognition for his songwriting prowess. He composed pieces for 702's 1997 release "Get It Together" as well as Drea's 1998 track "Not Gonna Letcha," earning respect throughout the music business in turn. Consequently, Jones achieved notable accomplishments with Where I Wanna Be together with the associated singles "U Know What's Up" and "Shorty (Got Her Eyes on Me)." In the period immediately succeeding the album launch, he provided a contribution to the Shaft soundtrack in the form of "Do What I Gotta Do" and additionally to Guru's Streetsoul project with "Hustlin' Daze," on which he supplied vocals as well. After taking a break during 2001, Jones came back in 2002 for his third album Life Goes On. This effort attained a peak position of number three on the album chart, although his next project did not arrive until Journey of a Gemini in 2006, which performed even better in terms of chart placement. Nevertheless, Jones and LaFace ended their association following the issuance of a 2007 greatest hits collection. After another three-year span, Jones entered into an independent agreement with eOne, resulting in the 2010 and 2013 albums Lyrics and Forever respectively, both of which featured him handling performance, composition, and production responsibilities almost entirely.
