Biography
Techno diva Billie Ray Martin entered the world in Hamburg and grew up there before passing her teenage years between London and Berlin. Early on she drew from '60s soul alongside early '80s industrial sounds, then in the mid-'80s fronted the Motown-inspired soul outfit Billie and the Deep, which first brought her attention through the Berlin club circuit. Returning to England in 1987, she assembled the techno-pop ensemble Electribe 101 and notched multiple club successes, among them “Talking with Myself.” Turning solo, Martin issued her debut album Deadline for My Memories in 1995; its opening single “Your Loving Arms” climbed into the UK Top Ten while claiming the top spot on the American club charts, whereas the next release “Running Around Town” came close to but missed the US Top Ten. She reappeared in 1999 via the Crimes & Punishment EP, then two years afterward delivered 18 Carat Garbage, the initial album to appear on her personal Sonnenstahl label.
