Black Anvil took shape in New York in 2007 when three ex-members of the recently disbanded hardcore band Kill Your Idols—vocalist and bassist P (Paul Delaney), guitarist G (Gary Bennett), and drummer and vocalist R (Raeph Glicken)—joined forces. Embracing the stark aesthetic of classic Scandinavian black metal filtered through an N.Y.C. lens, the trio tracked its first full-length, Time Insults the Mind, for Monumentum Records in 2008. Relapse Records soon stepped in, re-releasing the album in 2009 and sending the group on tour that summer as support for Marduk. While those dates were unfolding, Black Anvil were already tracking their follow-up, Triumvirate, which appeared in 2010. Extensive road work ensued alongside Watain, Goatwhore, and Behemoth, after which the band returned to the studio in 2012 to begin work on a third album. The finished record, Hail Death, arrived in 2014 and introduced second guitarist Jeremy Sosville to the studio lineup. Relapse issued the quartet’s fourth album, As Was, in 2016.
