In 2007, vocalist Richard Carter and guitarist Andreas Yiasmoumi launched Blackhole in Hertsfordshire, England, following the breakup of their earlier groups. The lineup reached its final form soon after with the arrival of second guitarist Nick Mitchell, drummer Alex Hunt, and bassist Max Hart. Two years later, after issuing an independently recorded four-track EP, the five young musicians began tracking their debut full-length, Dead Hearts, alongside noted producer Colin Richardson (Slipknot, Machine Head, etc.), who helped them broaden their hardcore foundation with accessible strains of alternative and indie rock.
