Biography
Bob Barnard ranks among Australia's leading jazz trumpeters, with a longstanding preference for traditional and pre-bop material. As the younger brother of acclaimed drummer Len Barnard, he first performed jazz in a family ensemble during 1947 and remained a member of Len's group for most of the ensuing eight years. He also fronted his own unit before relocating to Sydney in 1957, where he collaborated with Graeme Bell while maintaining an active local schedule. Barnard's initial visit to the United States occurred in 1978, when he made a strong impression at the Bix Beiderbecke festival in Davenport, Iowa; he has subsequently performed at numerous additional American festivals. His earliest recordings as a leader date from 1952, with later sessions appearing on Swaggie, Calligraph, and Sackville (1995), among other imprints, and he has further documented his work alongside pianist Ralph Sutton. Barnard's precise technique, firm tone, and buoyant swing have established him as a favored figure throughout the traditional jazz community.
