Recognized as one of the foremost jazz and studio bassists, Bob Magnusson has collaborated with nearly every major figure in contemporary jazz. Born to a clarinetist who performed with the San Diego Symphony, Magnusson devoted 12 years to the French horn before adopting the bass in 1967. His skills and distinctive tone advanced swiftly, resulting in a tour with Buddy Rich's Orchestra by 1968, appearances with the San Diego Symphony, and two periods alongside Sarah Vaughan in 1971-72 and 1975-76. A veteran studio musician for decades, Magnusson joined the cooperative Road Work Ahead from 1979 to 1982. His recording sessions encompass work with John Klemmer on Nexus, plus Art Pepper, Benny Golson, Joe Farrell, Linda Ronstadt backed by Nelson Riddle's Orchestra, Bud Shank, Laurindo Almeida, and Shorty Rogers, among numerous others. Beyond the Road Work Ahead releases, he has directed his own sessions for Discovery in 1979, 1980, and 1984, as well as for Trend in 1982.
