Dave Young, recognized for his nuanced touch and broad range as an acoustic bassist working in both jazz and classical idioms, grew up in Winnipeg, Manitoba before moving to Toronto in pursuit of a professional music career. Initial attention came through his partnership with guitarist Lenny Breau, which began in 1961. Roughly five years after departing that group, Young appeared on recordings and in performances alongside such established artists as Clark Terry, Zoot Sims, Moe Koffman, Nat Adderley, and Oscar Peterson. Over subsequent decades he became the bassist most often chosen to accompany visiting performers in Toronto, a role he maintained until issuing his debut album as a leader, Fables and Dreams, in 1993. In 1995 he convened several pianists, among them the aforementioned Peterson as well as Mulgrew Miller, Tommy Flanagan, and Renee Rosnes, to record the praised Two by Two, the opening installment in an ongoing series of bass-and-piano duets.
