Renowned for his skills behind the kit within Afro-Cuban and Latin jazz circles, percussionist Bobby Matos stands among the genre's most esteemed practitioners. His birth took place in New York City's Bronx on July 24, 1941, into a household steeped in music, although dance initially captured his attention more than instrumental performance. Serious pursuit of drumming commenced only in his late teens, coinciding with conga lessons absorbed in Harlem church basements, where Tito Puente served as a key influence. Los Congueros marked his entry into group performance, an ensemble limited to conga, flute, and bass. Leadership of his own band arrived by the late 1960s, coinciding with salsa's rising prominence, and yielded the notable track "My Latin Soul" under the production of Joe Cain, a prominent name in Latin jazz. Rather than sustain that role, Matos devoted himself exclusively to percussion duties, serving as a sideman across the subsequent twenty years. Relocation to California occurred by the 1980s, prompting fresh recording efforts. Consistent album releases followed throughout the 1990s, including Collage Afro Cuban Jazz in 1993, Chango Dance in 1995, Footprints in 1996, My Latin Soul in 1997, Sessions in 1998—a collection drawn from fourteen years of session work—Live at M.O.C.A. in 1999, and Mambo Jazz in 2001, the last featuring a partnership with jazz drummer John Santos.
