Biography
Bocato began studying music at seven within the ensemble of Escola Municipal Baeta Neves. He later pursued further training at Fundação das Artes de São Caetano, Instituto de Música do Planalto, and Faculdade da Unesp, concentrating on composition and conducting. During the late 1970s he performed alongside Arrigo Barnabé and Itamar Assunção at São Paulo’s Festival Universitário da Cultura, an event won by Arrigo for the song “Diversões Eletrônicas.” That collaboration marked what Bocato regards as his second phase of development; he joined Arrigo’s ensemble and performed extensively under his guidance. A third formative period arrived in 1980 when he appeared and recorded with Elis Regina on the production Saudades do Brasil. Under the tutelage of her arranger and pianist César Camargo Mariano, he deepened his practical immersion in Brazilian repertoire. Over the years he has collaborated with Rita Lee, Ney Matogrosso, Ná Ozetti, Zé Miguel Wisnik, Suzana Sales, Luiz Waack, Paulo Lepetit, Jarbas Mariz, Art Popular, Roberto Carlos, and additional artists. In 1982 he established Banda Metalurgia and released the album Banda Metalurgia, voted the year’s finest. His debut solo effort, Bocato, appeared in 1985 and was succeeded by Lixo Atômico, Sonho De Um Anarquista, and six further recordings, among which Bem Dito stands out. He performed at Switzerland’s Montreux Festival in 1994. Three years later he issued the CD Tributo a Pixinguinha, featuring fresh orchestrations of the composer’s key works; the project toured multiple European countries.
