The Los Angeles-via-London duo Bones UK, consisting of vocalist Rosie Bones and guitarist Carmen Vandenberg, fuses punk, industrial, blues, and electro-pop into what they term "future rock." Their 2019 self-titled debut channels pointed critiques of sexism alongside affirmations of sexuality and individuality, all matched to equally intense sonic textures.

Bones UK originated in 2014 after the pair first connected in London's Camden Town district. Vandenberg, who spent her childhood in Italy, began with violin studies before her father introduced her to Jimi Hendrix's Woodstock performance and prompted a shift to classical guitar. She later trained at London's Academy of Contemporary Music, where she recorded sessions with Kate Nash and Dave Stewart while still a teenager. Meanwhile, native Londoner and one-time art-school attendee Bones launched her own path as a drummer before choosing guitar as a better vehicle for the material she was composing. Their partnership merged Vandenberg's technical expertise with Bones' visual sensibility, leading to initial live appearances in 2015. One such performance earned the admiration of Jeff Beck, resulting in their contributions to his 2016 album Loud Hailer and subsequent joint touring.

Seeking fresh surroundings, Vandenberg and Bones relocated to Los Angeles in 2017 and teamed with producer Filippo Cimatti, a prior Academy of Contemporary Music classmate of Vandenberg's, to shape their debut. The sessions, captured across locations that included bathrooms and a basement studio, merged industrial and rock elements with a feminist perspective. Sumerian Records issued Bones UK in July 2019, and the duo closed the year with a Grammy Award nomination for Best Rock Performance.
