Brady Harris once led the Replacements-inspired Solid Goldsteins, yet his subsequent solo path moved away from that earlier direction toward a style shaped more overtly by his Texas origins. His singing carries a marked similarity to John Lennon’s while he shapes moody country-rock that incorporates a sharp pop bite. Melodies remain central to his approach, paired with assured humor as he blends familiar subjects and a steady romantic outlook. After years of living hand-to-mouth and performing for change on the sidewalks of Paris and London, he arrived in Los Angeles to cut one record alongside his old bandmates, then issued his first solo album, Next Door to Nowhere, in 1997. The record earned positive notices and drew significant press interest when Harris appeared at the 1999 NXNW music conference. Later that same year Good Luck Stranger arrived to widespread critical praise, prompting a European tour in the final months of 2000. The following two years found him playing across the United States and collecting several honors, among them a $5,000 prize in the Pontiac Vibe Car Commercial Contest that funded the making of 2003’s eagerly awaited Lone Star.
